Planned Gifts

"When I give to the work I care about, I give voice to my heart . . . "

The AAFCS Legacy Society

Our founder, Ellen H. Richards, left a rich legacy, as her namesake quilt (shown at right) illustrates. Her multi-colored quilt is on display at AAFCS headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia.

Those who remember AAFCS through a will, trust, designation or other planned gift, are invited to join in the AAFCS Legacy Society. Too often, these gifts are unrecognized because they come at the end of the donors' lives. The Legacy Society provides a way to recognize and thank donors during their lifetimes.

Involvement in the Legacy Society gives you the opportunity to enjoy the company of others who, like yourself, care about leaving a legacy to protect and strengthen the association and its support of family and consumer sciences professionals. Members are recognized in AAFCS publications and on our website and invited to special events at the Annual Conference as applicable.

You may always choose to remain anonymous in your philanthropy with AAFCS. However, participation in the Legacy Society can be an inspirational experience, and may encourage others to look toward the future and how they too may have an enduring impact on the causes they care about.

Only a statement of intent to leave a gift to AAFCS is required. No documentation of gift amount or type is necessary. Legacy Society members may designate the use of the distributions from their future gifts, or may leave the distributions to the discretion of the AAFCS Board of Directors. A Legacy Society gift may be used to establish a new fund or may be added to any of AAFCS' existing funds.

Let Us Know

Thinking of including AAFCS in your estate plans? Look below for sample bequest language.

How to Word Your Gift Document

When you include AAFCS in your will or other planned gift, please use our full legal name and address, and consult an attorney to ensure validity. The following is sample language for a will:

"I give, devise, and bequeath $____________ (or ____percent%) to the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences, (INSERT CURRENT MAILING ADDRESS), Alexandria, VA 22314, for its charitable uses and purposes (or for the project of your choice)."

If You Already Have a Will

If you already have a valid, updated will, you can have an attorney prepare and attach a codicil naming AAFCS as a beneficiary without having to rewrite your entire will (suggested wording above).

If you have any questions or need additional information about making a gift to AAFCS —legacy or otherwise, please call 1.800.424.8080 or email contributions@aafcs.org.
